Empowering Malili’s Future Together

Muindu Seeds and Deeds Foundation was set up in this year 2023 in honor of my Jennifer Katiti and son Robert Muthama. Jennifer was a community pillar and brought together women in the neigbourhood to share self-improvement opportunities, mentorship, fellowship and knowledge in God. For many years she wanted to set up a women centred school to teach various skills such as bakery, tailoring and entrepreneurship for self-sustainability.

Robert supported the less fortunate and marginalized students through fees payment and mentorship. He had hoped to set up a vocational centre for young people who have not been fortunate to complete high school due to fees constraints, negative peer influence, disability and early pregnancies. The centre was to offer technical skills training in Information Technology, Engineering among other skills.

Jennifer and Robert sadly passed away in 2019 and 2021 respectively due to a terminal lung disease, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) and this foundation is to ensure that their wishes are realized. For over 20 years I have worked with NGOs and donors to improve the lives of many communities such as Kakuswii School for the deaf, Suvia Children’s Home and others. My team and look forward to improving the standard of living and economic development in my local community in Malili, Kenya.

Frequently Asked Questions

The sustainability of the Centre is rooted in a multi-stream approach. The demonstration farm will produce crops and seedlings for sale, generating income to support operations. The Centre will also host community events and certified training workshops, some of which may carry minimal participation fees or attract external sponsorship. Partnerships with NGOs, government agencies, and agribusiness experts will ensure continued technical support. Additionally, regular soil testing services, farmer engagement programs, and strategic market linkages will keep the Centre relevant, productive, and financially viable.

Inclusivity is central to the Foundation’s mission. The Centre is located at Muindu Farm, easily accessible to surrounding villages. Training programs are designed with flexibility in mind, targeting not only young men but also women, school leavers, and adults without formal education. Topics such as hairdressing, farming, plumbing, and equipment repair were selected specifically because they offer quick, practical returns and can be tailored for various ability levels. The design of the Centre includes accessible facilities, and partnerships with local welfare groups like Tumaini and Ngiini Comrades will help mobilize underrepresented groups.

The Foundation identified several interconnected challenges in the Malili region: a 3-year drought that devastated crops and livestock, followed by El Niño flooding in 2023 that destroyed many farms. Farmers lacked knowledge of modern farming techniques and were heavily reliant on unpredictable rainfall. In terms of health, the loss of family members to Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) highlighted gaps in community awareness of chronic illnesses. These experiences shaped the integrated strategy—combining farming education, demonstration plots, wellness programs, and caregiver support—to address both the economic and health vulnerabilities of the rural population.

Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) will be a continuous, structured process. The Foundation will collect data on farm productivity, adoption of techniques taught during trainings, crop yield improvements, and attendance records. Follow-ups with trained farmers will assess their implementation progress, while success stories will be documented to inform future programming. For the health and well-being pillar, metrics will include participation in sensitization events, feedback from caregivers, and improvements in health literacy. The data gathered will be analyzed to refine program content, identify new needs, and report outcomes to stakeholders and partners.
